Are subject test scores of 720 in math II and physics too low for MIT or will it not make a huge difference?
For quite a while, I was an alumni interviewer for MIT, so I got to know the admissions criteria pretty well. An applicant asked me what the cutoff SAT score was required for admission. I said, “I think that you get a score of 200 for signing your name on the exam paper, so I guess the cutoff is 200.” Needless to say, she was shocked. I then said, “Consider someone who took the SAT with a terrific hangover, the result of celebrating his win of the Intel Science Talent Search . Suppose all they could do is sign their name. Do you really think that MIT would deny them admission?”
MIT wants students who stand the most to gain from an MIT education. Experience has shown that such students are overwhelmingly likely to have done very well on the SAT, but maybe not. They would much rather have students who don’t bother to study for the SAT —- even if they get mediocre scores —- because they are too busy building an atom smasher in their basement. When I suggested exactly that to someone from the admissions office, they sighed and said, “If only we could find them!”
