My thinking is to always try to be the very best you can be and I believe you’ll even have a decent chance to improve. “Nothing ventured and nothing gained” is a great maxim in this case.
What is the real downside in this case or opportunity costs?- a few less video games. You don’t ever want to have any future regrets and the fact you are asking here on Quora, tells me you probably will have some regrets not taking it at least once more.
It’s very slight and almost indistinguishable difference mathematically and a 1600 score btw is a possible bullseye too (for you) since so it’s so rare at a few thousand annually. Still in college admissions those 20–40 points more on the SAT for elite admission can really help make you stand out. To be a top candidate you want everything to be ultra elite and a 1580–1600 is extremely rare.
Personally, I would take it a second time and why not? At the ivys, the 75th percentile for admits is 1560–1580 SAT score, so its almost like getting those few extra inches in a close football game. That extra inch and the ensuing first down could be the final difference between winning the game. In college admissions, it could help get one or two more admits to a school you admire.
At the end of the day, it can’t hurt retaking the SAT but there is really no bad choice.
